Refreshed with a Thankful Heart

I recently had the privilege of traveling to Thailand to meet with various Athletes in Action staff members from around the world for the 2007 AIA World Leadership Conference. While in Thailand, I was able to speak with many AIA national delegates and I found myself encouraged and inspired by how God is fulfilling His Great Commission (Matthew 28:19, 20) through these precious men and women.

Compelled by the passion and compassion our staff members have for the spiritually lost, I intently listened and was challenged by the various stories of changed lives. It also became very apparent that many face God-sized challenges in their respective countries, lacking even the most basic resources to forward their ministries. But still God is honoring their efforts. He is not limited by what they lack but He is their daily provision and guide-their everything. Arguably one of the greatest lessons I learned during my time with them is that these saints possess a deep contentment.

With the holiday season beginning, Thailand served as a reminder of the daily blessings I experience in my life, since many throughout the world lack much in the form of physical and spiritual needs. I am encouraged by our AIA staff members worldwide-their hearts and willingness to serve in regions of the world that have little to offer in the area of personal comfort. They are committed to continually make a change in the world by communicating Christ's love, and I am compelled by their example.

My heart breaks for the helpless, those we have the opportunity to impact. But far too often we miss or overlook them. As Christmas quickly approaches, I think of the various families in our communities that will have little to eat or no gifts to receive. For the first time, many will be celebrate Christmas without a specific loved one around the table. How can we be sensitive to those around us who hurt and are in need?

My encouragement to each of you-and myself-this holiday season is to seek out individuals whom God has placed in your life. Ask God how He would have you step in and meet the need of another friend. How can you partner with one struggling? Maybe God would ask you to pray and fast for loved ones, provide gifts for those who would have none, send a card of encouragement, or simply listen to a friend. Be an example of the voice and touch of Christ that others around you are desperately waiting for, a change agent that God can use to reshape the world. In the end, God will honor your efforts and you will see things happen that, when they do, can only be attributed to Him.

Happy Holidays!
