Because of technology and the Internet, new avenues of communication consistently open up for Christian athletes to talk about their faith.
Athletes in Action has taken advantage of the new information-age by developing an evangelistic Web site (www.beyondtheultimate.org) that features videos, articles and personal faith stories of well-known sports personalities who tell how a personal relationship with Jesus has given their lives meaning and purpose.
The Web site was born last year through an evangelistic initiative with NFL coaches Tony Dungy and Lovie Smith in conjunction with the Indianapolis Colts and Chicago Bears meeting in the 2007 Super Bowl. AIA and Campus Crusade for Christ partnered to see the see the Web site come to fruition. Both Dungy and Smith are featured on the site.
Others featured include Tim Howard, Dallas Clark, John Wooden, Kay Yow and Clark Kellogg, just to name a few.
Posted articles entitled Beyond Blind Faith, Is there a God? and Where is God in the Midst of Tragedy? give readers insight and answer spiritual questions they might have. Those who desire to know more about a personal relationship with God can be followed up by volunteers waiting to answer their questions.
“From its birth, the heart behind the Web site was to provide a place where a cyber megaphone could propel stories of faith from athletes, coaches and sports personalities in such a way that these stories could be broadcast and heard around the world,” says AIA president Bill Pugh.
In the near future AIA plans to feature stories from an athlete or coach from each team in the NFL playoffs, as well as an Olympic section this summer that features athletes from around the world competing in the 2008 Summer Games in Beijing.
