As the summer schedule picks up, I'm reminded of the God-instituted, timeless trait of self-discipline. Self-discipline is defined as an intentional correction or regulation of oneself for the sake of improvement. I have recently been reflecting on this trait knowing that it directly relates to being continually conformed into Christ-likeness. I have looked into the lives of various biblical characters and one common characteristic they have each exhibited is self-discipline. Whether this trait is found in their prayer and devotion, spending time with their family, pursuing social activities, refraining from specific dietary items or maintaining physical fitness, self-discipline is embodied in the lives of those whom God has chosen to use.
I think of Daniel's refusal to worship King Nebuchadnezzar and his personal resolve to remain faithful in prayer to Almighty God three times daily. I'm further amazed at Daniel's determination and "resolve not to defile himself" with royal food and solely consume vegetables and water (Daniel 1:8). As I continue to read how God granted Daniel protection and favor, I'm struck with his unwavering faithfulness. Because of Daniel's commitment to avoid defilement, God worked through his life resulting in Nebuchadnezzar finally acknowledging the one, true God! Somewhere in Daniel's life, he resolved to live by his convictions even if that meant foreseeable death by a fiery furnace or starving lions.
Daniel's example inspires me today to follow his disciplined model, knowing that in doing so I'll be more readily available for God to use. Whether that resembles making tough decisions organizationally for the benefit of the whole or by being a small expression of God's love through buying another's meal unexpectedly, I understand the importance of being disciplined enough to listen daily and hear the voice of God.
I challenge you to be openly available with what God has day by day for you. Know, listen and respond in obedience to what He is calling you to accomplish. For this to occur, you must first have a personal relationship with Him and then be actively and openly listening to His voice through Scripture, prayer and wise spiritual council. Your devotional time may need to become more regular and your commitment will need to increase in order to go to new levels with Christ.
Furthermore, in a day with questionable morals and shady business ethics, I challenge you to know your personal convictions and your boundaries and stay within those pre-established guidelines, believing that God will honor your faithfulness.
I realize that a self-disciplined life correlates with a well-balanced life. As life goes by at an increasing rate, it is imperative to find a healthy balance by knowing your boundaries and putting them into practice. Know that in doing so you will see things occur in life that, when they happen, can only be attributed to God.
